Goodbye My Love

This is a sad time. I'm leaving my favorite city. But these past two days showed me why I love New York so much.

Today I woke up around 11 and was out in the city by 2. I did some shopping, mostly window shopping because I want to save up for senior trip and college. But I bought myself some stuff at urban outfitters, not to worry.

New York is such a beautiful place. And each part has its own identity. I spent time in the Bronx, Manhattan, the Upper East Side, Soho, Greenwich Village and everywhere in between. I ate some of the best food today also. Especially mozzarella pizza at this little pizza shop in Greenwich Village. It was by far the best pizza I've ever had.

While the sights, shops, and food are miraculous, what makes New York so special is the people. True New Yorkers are a sight. There are hipsters, gangsters, hobos, and businessmen. The one place these people all come together though is the subway. To me, the subway is much more than a mass transit. It is a place to observe people and learn about them.

I rode the subway 4 times these past two days. I took a lot of mental notes. The first of which is that chivalry really isn't dead. Okay maybe it isn't chivalry, but anytime a woman got on the subway a man who was sitting down gave up his seat. It didn't matter why he looked like. Rich, poor, black, white, Asian. They all stood up. Maybe it's just common courtesy, but I thought it was cool to see.

The next thing I noticed was the overwhelming number of people who closed their eyes for the ride. I wonder if it's because they're tired? Or is it something more? I feel like it's more than that. I feel like these people are visualizing something. Whether it's a more blissful life or they're just day dreaming. I like to think that the ride on the subway is a time to escape for those who need it. If only for those five or ten minutes that homeless man can be living in a pent house. Or maybe that business man gets to escape his troubles for a twenty minute ride. Whatever each person needs, I think that the subway gives them a chance to escape to a better place. If only momentarily before they have to go on with their day. I know that I don't close my eyes on the subway. Because I know where I'm at and I'm happy with that, plus I kinda like people watching.

In summation the subway is a place for the chivalrous and for those who need an escape. Personally, I only ride to be chivalrous.

Well that's my view on the subway that I promised you guys yesterday. I need to try and get some sleep on this bus...unfortunately the girl in front of me jut leaned her seat back into my legs...might be a long night.
